Osteopathy

Osteopathy is based on 4 basic principles:

  • The body is a unit and everything that happens in one part of the body has an influence on the other parts.
  • Structure (e.g. bones, muscles, joints, etc.) governs function (e.g. breathing, digestion, circulation, etc.) and vice versa.
  • The artery is supreme. Blood is used to supply vital elements to the cells and therefore to the organs, and to eliminate waste products. An altered supply in certain parts of the body can disrupt the function of the organ (e.g. constipation -> circulatory problems in the lower limbs).
  • The body has an innate ability to defend, regulate and heal itself.

Osteopaths are mainly consulted in the event of a crisis.

  • After any type of accident, fall or trauma.
  • In the event of ‘painful compensations’: sometimes, despite the absence of ‘objective’ radiological signs, fear or emotion are enough to block certain functions, such as breathing, to modify the movement of the diaphragm and cause pain.
  • In all cases of trauma or cranial shock with or without loss of consciousness (after consulting your doctor or a specialist service).
  • In cases of acute spinal pain: cervical, back or lumbar.

In addition, an osteopathic session is an opportunity to get to know your body better, and by becoming aware of the interdependence of the body’s different elements, you will be better able to recognise the symptoms that herald the onset of a more serious disorder.

In this sense, osteopathy can also be used as a preventive tool.

Frequently asked questions

Who can consult?

Health and well-being have no age limit, so osteopathy can help :

  • Newborns after birth (especially in the event of a difficult birth).
  • Children learning to go to school and fast-growing teenagers.
  • Adults and the elderly

Osteopathy is for everyone, and the techniques applied are adapted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the patient, while respecting any medical contraindications.

What are the limits of osteopathy?

Osteopathy cannot cure degenerative, infectious genetic and/or inflammatory diseases, or fractures. However, it can sometimes have an effect on some of their consequences, such as pain, by releasing tension in the surrounding structures.

Osteopathy does not replace antibiotics or medication when they are necessary, or surgery when it is essential.

When should you consult?

Osteopathy has a very wide range of applications. Osteopathy is also a preventive medicine.

One or two consultations a year to check your body’s structure and state of health can help limit or even prevent future pain and/or disorders of the muscles, joints, nerves or digestive system.

Is osteopathy reimbursed by my mutual insurance company?

Partly. The intervention ranges from €10 to €15 per session, depending on the mutual insurance company.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for osteopathic sessions?

No, unless you are covered by the European Communities insurance scheme.
