A psychiatrist is a doctor specialized in psychiatric diagnosis and the care of psychiatric patients. In Belgium, the psychiatrist attends a12 year university course. 7 years of which are spent studying medicine with a further 5 years specializing in psychiatry. This degree gives the doctor the right to prescribe drugs and to apply techniques reserved to medical professionals.
Psychiatric consultations can be partially or fully reimbursed by the National institute of illnesses and disability insurance. Psychiatric consultations may vary in form and content depending on the patient’s specific requirements and on the psychiatrist specialty particularly when it comes to the type of psychotherapy proposed.
